About & support

solnix.io is the community infrastructure for solnix — illumos built with Nix. It's a gift to the community, run and paid for by one person. Here's what it is, how it's hosted, what it costs, and how you can help.

What this is

solnix.io hosts everything the project needs to be usable in the open: the website and handbook, the signed binary cache (cache.solnix.io), full-text package search, the mailing lists and public-inbox archives, a git mirror, peer-to-peer cache distribution, and privacy-respecting telemetry. All of it is open source — solnix-site and solnix-infra.

No accounts. No ads. No tracking. No personal data in telemetry — see the privacy page. Everything served is public.

How it's hosted

A managed Kubernetes cluster (Civo k3s, London) runs the services behind an ingress load balancer with automatic TLS. The binary cache is stored on Backblaze B2 and served through Cloudflare — egress is free via the Bandwidth Alliance, which is what keeps a package cache affordable. Backups go nightly to an isolated off-site repository. Package builds run on disposable, short-lived cloud instances that cost nothing at rest.

The status page has live service health and the full cost breakdown.

Who runs it

solnix.io is operated by Greg Burd, who pays all hosting fees personally. It is a volunteer effort and a gift to the illumos and Nix communities.

Support & sponsors

Tip jar planned

A tip jar is planned to help defray the roughly $68/month (~$815/year) it costs to keep solnix.io running (see the status page for the breakdown). If solnix is useful to you, you'll be able to chip in here when it opens. The site does not currently accept donations.

Sponsors planned

If your organization relies on solnix or illumos-on-Nix and would like to sponsor the infrastructure (hosting, build capacity, or a named line item on this page), that option is planned too. Sponsorship will be acknowledged here and nowhere intrusive — no ads, no tracking, ever.

Both are placeholders today. No money is collected and there is nothing to click yet. When they open, this page and the status page's cost table will show them.
