autopoint(1) on Solnix vs Linux and the BSDs

autopoint is not in the Solnix base system; it comes from pkgs.solnix.gettext (GNU gettext-tools 0.22.5). The Solnix page matches the Linux page (gettext-tools 1.0) in synopsis and options, so there is no option-level difference. The bundle has no BSD counterpart.

What Solnix runs

Not installed by default: add pkgs.solnix.gettext. The published Solnix page is the GNU gettext-tools 0.22.5 page (February 2024). The bundle shows no other variants.

Differences

Compared withTopicWhat differs
Linuxsame program, different versionSolnix and Linux document the same GNU autopoint with identical synopsis and options (--help, --version, -f/--force, -n/--dry-run). Only the gettext-tools release differs: 0.22.5 on Solnix, 1.0 on Linux.
Source: Solnix autopoint(1) footer (GNU gettext-tools 0.22.5) and OPTIONS; Linux autopoint(1) footer (GNU gettext-tools 1.0) and OPTIONS
LinuxavailabilityOn Solnix, autopoint is not on PATH by default and must be installed with pkgs.solnix.gettext. The Linux page does not say how it is packaged.
Source: Solnix bundle header (none: install pkgs.solnix.gettext); Linux autopoint(1) (no packaging information)
FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSDno BSD counterpart pageThe bundle includes no FreeBSD, OpenBSD or NetBSD autopoint page, so the manual does not say whether these systems ship it or how it behaves there.
Source: Bundle header (only a linux counterpart is listed)

Standards

  • POSIX: autopoint is not a POSIX.1-2024 utility.

Writing portable scripts

  • Do not assume autopoint exists on a default Solnix or BSD system. Check with command -v autopoint, and on Solnix install pkgs.solnix.gettext first.

Every difference here is taken from the manual pages linked above: Solnix's published page, Linux (man-pages and the GNU and util-linux manuals), FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD. Each row names its source. Where a manual is silent, this page is too. Compiled 2026-10-26. Found a mistake? Mail hackers@lists.solnix.io.
