dlltool(1) on Solnix vs Linux and the BSDs
dlltool is the GNU binutils tool that creates .def files, exports files and import libraries for building DLLs. It is not in the base Solnix system; install pkgs.solnix.binutils. The Solnix page and the Linux (binutils-2.46) page document the same synopsis and options, and no BSD counterpart page is in the bundle.

What Solnix runs
Not installed by default: add pkgs.solnix.binutils. The bundle lists no other illumos variants of dlltool.
Differences
| Compared with | Topic | What differs |
|---|---|---|
| Linux | same program | The Solnix dlltool(1) page and the Linux dlltool(1) page (binutils-2.46) show the same SYNOPSIS and the same option list. The option text compared in the bundle is identical apart from line wrapping. Treat them as the same program. Source: Solnix dlltool(1) SYNOPSIS, OPTIONS; Linux dlltool(1) SYNOPSIS, OPTIONS |
| Linux | availability | On a default Solnix system dlltool is not on PATH. Install pkgs.solnix.binutils to get it. The Linux page does not say how Linux distributions package it. Source: Solnix bundle header (command on PATH: none: install pkgs.solnix.binutils); Linux dlltool(1) |
| FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD | no BSD counterpart page | The bundle has no FreeBSD, OpenBSD or NetBSD dlltool page. The manual text provided does not say whether dlltool exists on those systems or how it differs there. Source: Bundle header (only a linux counterpart is listed) |
| Linux | -m long form | The Solnix page lists the long form of -m as -machine, with a single dash, in the OPTIONS text. The SYNOPSIS shows --machine. The Linux SYNOPSIS also shows --machine. The Linux OPTIONS text for -m is trimmed in the bundle, so it cannot be compared.Source: Solnix dlltool(1) OPTIONS (-m machine, -machine machine) and SYNOPSIS; Linux dlltool(1) SYNOPSIS |
| Linux | -D long form | Both SYNOPSIS sections show -D|--dllname name. The Solnix OPTIONS text writes the long option as --dll-name name. The mechanically extracted flags list both --dll-name and --dllname.Source: Solnix dlltool(1) SYNOPSIS and OPTIONS (-D name, --dll-name name); Linux dlltool(1) SYNOPSIS |
| Linux | -b long form | The Solnix OPTIONS text writes the long form as --base-file base-file-name in the first pass, with the argument written as filename. Both systems use -b/--base-file with a filename argument. The documented behaviour is the same.Source: Solnix dlltool(1) OPTIONS (-b); Linux dlltool(1) OPTIONS (-b) |
Standards
- POSIX: dlltool is not a POSIX.1-2024 utility.
Writing portable scripts
- Do not assume dlltool is installed. On Solnix install pkgs.solnix.binutils first. The bundle gives no information about BSD systems.
- Pass long options in the form shown in the SYNOPSIS (for example
--dllnameand--machine), because the OPTIONS text spells some long forms differently.
Every difference here is taken from the manual pages linked above: Solnix's published page, Linux (man-pages and the GNU and util-linux manuals), FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD. Each row names its source. Where a manual is silent, this page is too. Compiled 2026-10-26. Found a mistake? Mail hackers@lists.solnix.io.
