etdump(1) on Solnix vs Linux and the BSDs

On Solnix, etdump is the illumos etdump at /usr/bin/etdump. Its synopsis, options (-f, -o and the long forms --format, --output) and shell-format variables match FreeBSD etdump(1) in the bundle. Linux, OpenBSD and NetBSD have no counterpart page here.

What Solnix runs

A default Solnix system runs the illumos etdump at /usr/bin/etdump. The page is published by pkgs.solnix.illumos-world-man. No other variants are shipped.

Differences

Compared withTopicWhat differs
FreeBSDsame interfaceSolnix and FreeBSD etdump have the same synopsis, [-f format] [-o file] file ..., and the same options. Both default to the text format. Both offer a shell format that emits et_platform, et_system, et_lba and et_sectors for eval. Scripts need no changes between them.

FreeBSDimage type wordingThe FreeBSD page says it reads El Torito boot catalog information from an ISO-9660 image. The Solnix page says only ISO image. The manual does not say whether behaviour differs.
Source: Solnix etdump(1) NAME, DESCRIPTION; FreeBSD etdump(1) NAME, DESCRIPTION
FreeBSDdocumentation coverageThe FreeBSD page has SEE ALSO (cd9660(4)) and HISTORY (first appeared in FreeBSD 11.2). The Solnix page has neither section, so it gives no history or related-page pointers.
Source: FreeBSD etdump(1) SEE ALSO, HISTORY; Solnix etdump(1) (sections present)
Linux, OpenBSD, NetBSDno counterpart pageThe bundle has no etdump page for Linux, OpenBSD or NetBSD. The manual does not say whether they provide an equivalent tool, so a script cannot assume etdump exists there.

Standards

  • POSIX: etdump is not a POSIX.1-2024 utility.

Writing portable scripts

  • Use -f shell and eval the output to read et_platform, et_system, et_lba (2048-byte blocks) and et_sectors (512-byte sectors). This is documented identically on Solnix and FreeBSD. Check that etdump exists first, since the bundle shows no page for Linux, OpenBSD or NetBSD.

Every difference here is taken from the manual pages linked above: Solnix's published page, Linux (man-pages and the GNU and util-linux manuals), FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD. Each row names its source. Where a manual is silent, this page is too. Compiled 2026-10-26. Found a mistake? Mail hackers@lists.solnix.io.
