gettextize(1) on Solnix vs Linux and the BSDs

gettextize is not in the Solnix base system. Install pkgs.solnix.gettext to get it. The Solnix page is GNU gettext-tools 0.22.5, and the Linux page is gettext-tools 1.0. The two pages list the same synopsis and options. The bundle has no FreeBSD, OpenBSD or NetBSD gettextize page.

What Solnix runs

Not installed by default: add pkgs.solnix.gettext. The published Solnix page is from GNU gettext-tools 0.22.5 (February 2024). No other illumos variants are shipped.

Differences

Compared withTopicWhat differs
Linuxsame program, different versionSolnix and Linux document the same GNU gettextize. The synopsis and all seven options (--help, --version, -f/--force, --po-dir, --no-changelog, --symlink, -n/--dry-run) are identical in the two pages. Only the release differs: gettext-tools 0.22.5 on Solnix, 1.0 on Linux.

Linuxavailabilitygettextize is not in the Solnix base system, so a script cannot assume it is on PATH. Install pkgs.solnix.gettext first. The Linux page does not say how Linux packages it.
Source: Solnix bundle header (none: install pkgs.solnix.gettext); Linux gettextize(1) has no installation text
FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSDno BSD counterpart pageThe bundle includes no gettextize page for FreeBSD, OpenBSD or NetBSD, so the manual cannot be used to compare behaviour with them. Do not assume the tool or its options exist on those systems.
Source: Bundle header lists only a Linux counterpart
Linuxdocumentation locationBoth pages say the full documentation is a Texinfo manual, read with info gettextize. The man page only lists options and does not describe what files gettextize installs or changes.

Standards

  • POSIX: gettextize is not a POSIX.1-2024 utility.

Writing portable scripts

  • Check that gettextize is on PATH before calling it, and install pkgs.solnix.gettext on Solnix if it is missing.
  • Use -n (--dry-run) to see what gettextize would change before running it on a source tree. The page documents this flag for both Solnix and Linux.

Every difference here is taken from the manual pages linked above: Solnix's published page, Linux (man-pages and the GNU and util-linux manuals), FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD. Each row names its source. Where a manual is silent, this page is too. Compiled 2026-10-26. Found a mistake? Mail hackers@lists.solnix.io.
