pppstats(8) on Solnix vs Linux and the BSDs
On Solnix, pppstats is the illumos pppstats at /usr/bin/pppstats. It defaults to interface sppp0, where OpenBSD and NetBSD default to ppp0. The Solnix page has no -d (data rate) option, which both BSDs document.
The manual pages
- Solnix: pppstats(8) from
pkgs.solnix.illumos-world-man· illumos.org - OpenBSD: pppstats(8) 8.0
- NetBSD: pppstats(8) 11.0
What Solnix runs
A default Solnix system runs the illumos pppstats at /usr/bin/pppstats. No other variants are shipped. The Solnix page does not describe the output columns (IN, PACK, VJCOMP and so on), which the OpenBSD and NetBSD pages list.
Differences
| Compared with | Topic | What differs |
|---|---|---|
| OpenBSD, NetBSD | default interface | With no interface argument, Solnix pppstats reports on sppp0. OpenBSD and NetBSD report on ppp0. A script that relies on the default needs an explicit interface name to work on both. Source: Solnix pppstats(8) DESCRIPTION; OpenBSD pppstats(8) DESCRIPTION; NetBSD pppstats(8) DESCRIPTION |
| OpenBSD, NetBSD | -d missing | Solnix pppstats has no -d. On OpenBSD and NetBSD, -d shows values as a data rate (KB/s, kB/s on NetBSD) instead of bytes. A script using -d fails or errors on Solnix.Source: Solnix pppstats(8) SYNOPSIS and OPTIONS; OpenBSD pppstats(8) -d; NetBSD pppstats(8) -d |
| OpenBSD | -w default interval | The Solnix page says the default -w interval is five seconds. The OpenBSD page gives no default interval for -w.Source: Solnix pppstats(8) -w; OpenBSD pppstats(8) -w |
| OpenBSD | -a with -c and -w | The OpenBSD page describes -a only in combination with -c and/or -w, where every report shows time since the link was initiated. The Solnix page says that with -a all reports show statistics since link start, and without it later reports show deltas.Source: Solnix pppstats(8) -a; OpenBSD pppstats(8) -a, -c |
| OpenBSD, NetBSD | output fields not documented | OpenBSD and NetBSD list every output field (IN, OUT, PACK, VJCOMP, VJUNC, VJERR, VJTOSS, NON-VJ, VJSRCH, VJMISS, RATIO, UBYTE, and the -z fields). The Solnix page does not. For column meanings on Solnix, the manual does not say.Source: OpenBSD pppstats(8) DESCRIPTION field lists; NetBSD pppstats(8) DESCRIPTION field lists; Solnix pppstats(8) DESCRIPTION |
| Linux | no Linux counterpart in bundle | The bundle contains no Linux pppstats page, so nothing is claimed about Linux behaviour. Source: Bundle header: counterparts are openbsd and netbsd only |
Standards
- POSIX: pppstats is not a POSIX.1-2024 utility.
- Solnix: Interface Stability: Evolving.
Writing portable scripts
- Always pass the interface name explicitly: the default is sppp0 on Solnix and ppp0 on OpenBSD and NetBSD.
- Do not use
-din portable scripts. Solnix does not document it, while OpenBSD and NetBSD do.
Every difference here is taken from the manual pages linked above: Solnix's published page, Linux (man-pages and the GNU and util-linux manuals), FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD. Each row names its source. Where a manual is silent, this page is too. Compiled 2026-10-26. Found a mistake? Mail hackers@lists.solnix.io.
