rquotad(8) on Solnix vs Linux and the BSDs

rquotad is the illumos remote quota server at /usr/lib/nfs/rquotad, run by inetd under SMF as svc:/network/nfs/rquota. The NetBSD counterpart is rpc.rquotad at /usr/libexec/rpc.rquotad. Only the NetBSD page is in the bundle, so it is the only comparison made.

What Solnix runs

A default Solnix system runs the illumos rquotad. It is not in /usr/bin, /usr/sbin or /sbin, and the daemon lives under /usr/lib/nfs. No other variants are shipped. Manage it with svcadm(8) and inetadm(8), and query it with svcs(1).

Differences

Compared withTopicWhat differs
NetBSDdaemon path and nameSolnix installs the daemon as /usr/lib/nfs/rquotad. NetBSD installs it as /usr/libexec/rpc.rquotad, and the NAME line lists both rpc.rquotad and rquotad. Do not hard-code one path in scripts.

NetBSDservice managementOn Solnix the daemon is an SMF service, svc:/network/nfs/rquota. It is enabled and disabled with svcadm(8), configured with inetadm(8), and inetd(8) starts and restarts it. The NetBSD page says only that inetd(8) normally invokes it and names no service tool.
Source: Solnix rquotad(8) NOTES; NetBSD rquotad(8) DESCRIPTION
NetBSDautomatic enablingOn Solnix, a disabled rquotad is enabled by mount_nfs(8), share_nfs(8) and automountd(8) unless its application/auto_enable property is false. The NetBSD page does not describe any such behaviour.
Source: Solnix rquotad(8) NOTES; NetBSD rquotad(8) (no equivalent text)
NetBSDclient command sectionThe Solnix page says the client is quota(8), in section 8. The NetBSD page refers to quota(1), in section 1. The client command is therefore documented in a different manual section on each system.
Source: Solnix rquotad(8) DESCRIPTION, SEE ALSO; NetBSD rquotad(8) DESCRIPTION, SEE ALSO
NetBSDprotocol definitionThe NetBSD page names /usr/include/rpcsvc/rquota.x as the RPC protocol definition. The Solnix page does not name a protocol file. It refers to rpc(5) and services(5) and notes largefile(7) behaviour for files of 2 Gbyte or more.
Source: NetBSD rquotad(8) DESCRIPTION; Solnix rquotad(8) DESCRIPTION, USAGE, SEE ALSO
Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSDno counterpart in the bundleThe bundle has no Linux, FreeBSD or OpenBSD rquotad page. The manual does not say how those systems provide remote quota service.

Standards

  • POSIX: rquotad is not a POSIX.1-2024 utility.

Writing portable scripts

  • Do not hard-code the daemon path. It is /usr/lib/nfs/rquotad on Solnix and /usr/libexec/rpc.rquotad on NetBSD. On Solnix, manage the service by FMRI svc:/network/nfs/rquota rather than running the binary.

Every difference here is taken from the manual pages linked above: Solnix's published page, Linux (man-pages and the GNU and util-linux manuals), FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD. Each row names its source. Where a manual is silent, this page is too. Compiled 2026-10-26. Found a mistake? Mail hackers@lists.solnix.io.
