rup(1) on Solnix vs Linux and the BSDs

On Solnix, rup is the illumos rup at /usr/bin/rup. It shows uptime-style status for remote hosts through RPC, by broadcast or for named hosts. Unlike OpenBSD and NetBSD, it has no -d option. Unlike FreeBSD, its sort options -h, -l and -t are documented and not marked as unimplemented.

What Solnix runs

A default Solnix system runs the illumos rup at /usr/bin/rup. No other variants are shipped. The page is published by pkgs.solnix.illumos-world-man.

Differences

Compared withTopicWhat differs
OpenBSD, NetBSD-d optionOpenBSD and NetBSD rup -d reports each host's local time, for checking time synchronization. Solnix rup has no -d, so a script that uses it fails on Solnix.

FreeBSDsort optionsSolnix rup documents -h (sort by host name), -l (sort by load average) and -t (sort by up time). The FreeBSD synopsis is rup [host ...] with no options, and its BUGS section says the sorting options are not implemented.

FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSDsynopsis formThe Solnix page gives two synopsis forms: rup [-hlt] and rup [host]... The BSD pages give one form that combines options and hosts. The Solnix page does not say whether options can be combined with host arguments.
Source: Solnix rup(1) SYNOPSIS; OpenBSD rup(1) SYNOPSIS; NetBSD rup(1) SYNOPSIS
FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSDoutput descriptionThe BSD pages say the output shows the time of day, the uptime and the 1, 5 and 15 minute load averages. The Solnix page says only that the status is similar to uptime, and does not give the fields.

FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSDbroadcast limits and name serviceThe Solnix page says broadcasting does not work through gateways. With no name service, it shows hosts as numeric IP addresses. The BSD pages say neither.

FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSDremote daemonThe remote host must run rstatd on Solnix, and rpc.rstatd(8) on the BSDs. The Solnix page does not name the daemon as rpc.rstatd and does not refer to rpcbind or portmap.

Standards

Writing portable scripts

  • Use rup only with host names and no options in portable scripts. -d exists only on OpenBSD and NetBSD, and FreeBSD says the sort options are not implemented.
  • Do not depend on sorted output. Pipe the output through sort if you need an order.

Every difference here is taken from the manual pages linked above: Solnix's published page, Linux (man-pages and the GNU and util-linux manuals), FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD.
