shuf(1) on Solnix vs Linux and the BSDs

shuf is not in the Solnix base system. You add GNU coreutils shuf with pkgs.solnix.coreutils. Its page matches the Linux GNU shuf page: same synopsis, same options. The bundle has no BSD shuf page, so no BSD comparison can be made from it.

What Solnix runs

Not installed by default: add pkgs.solnix.coreutils. The Solnix page is the GNU coreutils shuf page (footer: GNU coreutils 9.7, April 2025). No illumos variant of shuf is listed in the bundle.

Differences

Linuxsame programSolnix and Linux both document GNU coreutils shuf. The SYNOPSIS and the option list (-e, -i, -n, -o, -r, -z, --random-source, --help, --version) are identical in the two pages.

Linuxcoreutils versionThe Solnix page footer says GNU coreutils 9.7 (April 2025). The Linux counterpart in the bundle is labelled coreutils-full-9.11. The two option lists are identical. Run shuf --version to see which release you have.

FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSDBSD counterparts not in bundleThe bundle includes no FreeBSD, OpenBSD or NetBSD shuf page. The manual texts given here do not say whether those systems ship shuf or what options it has. Check each system's own manual before relying on it.

Standards

  • POSIX: shuf is not a POSIX.1-2024 utility.

Writing portable scripts

  • Test for shuf with command -v shuf before using it. It is not in the Solnix base system and is not POSIX, so provide a fallback or require pkgs.solnix.coreutils.
  • Stick to the options both pages document (-e, -i, -n, -o, -r, -z, --random-source) and do not assume anything else exists in other shuf implementations.

Every difference here is taken from the manual pages linked above: Solnix's published page, Linux (man-pages and the GNU and util-linux manuals), FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD. Each row names its source. Where a manual is silent, this page is too. Compiled 2026-10-26. Found a mistake? Mail hackers@lists.solnix.io.
