For Windows users

This is the longest trip of anyone’s — and we’ll be honest about that up front. Solnix is a Unix server/developer operating system; it does not have a Windows- like desktop, Explorer, the registry, or .exe compatibility, and its graphical environment is still in bring-up (see the status). If you have used WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux), PowerShell, or Hyper-V, you already have the footholds that make this approachable. This page maps Windows concepts onto their Solnix equivalents; each row points at the deeper chapter.

Solnix is illumos — a Unix — managed with Nix. The single biggest adjustment: the system is described declaratively in text and rebuilt atomically, rather than configured by clicking and by in-place installers.

What actually feels different

Everything is text, and the system is rebuilt, not patched. On Windows you install and update software in place and configure it through GUIs and the registry. On Solnix you describe the machine in Nix, run a rebuild, and get a new, complete, atomically-activated system — with the previous one still bootable for instant rollback (a boot environment). There is no registry and no in-place installer drift; the text is the system. This is the central habit to learn. See Learning Nix.

Services are SMF — like services.msc, but dependency-aware and text-driven. Instead of sc.exe or the Services console, you describe smf.services.* and Solnix renders SMF manifests. svcs lists services, svcs -x diagnoses a broken one (it names the stuck dependency and its log), and a failing service lands in maintenance rather than silently retrying. See SMF services.

WSL → LX zones is the closest analogy you have. WSL runs Linux binaries on Windows; an LX-branded zone runs Linux binaries on the illumos kernel, no VM. And where you reached for Hyper-V, illumos gives you zones (lightweight native isolation) and bhyve (full VMs). On Solnix this tooling is early; see Zones and LX zones.

The command line is the primary interface. PowerShell’s object pipeline is powerful; the Unix world uses a text pipeline plus purpose-built tools — and for anything deep, DTrace (the tool ETW aspired to be) traces the whole system safely. Expect to live in a shell. See DTrace.

pfexec, not "Run as administrator." illumos splits “root” into dozens of fine-grained kernel privileges and grants users RBAC roles; pfexec runs a command with your authorized profiles. It is UAC’s idea — least privilege — but built into the kernel and far finer-grained.

The honest part

Windows is a desktop OS first. Solnix is not a desktop OS today — it installs and runs headless on real hardware (with wifi), and a graphical desktop is in active bring-up but not working on hardware yet (see the news). There is no .exe compatibility and no Windows API. Solnix is a strong choice if you want to learn Unix properly, run servers, or build reproducibly; it is not a Windows replacement for everyday desktop use. We would rather you know that now.

What Solnix is not

 • Not Windows — no registry, no Win32/.exe, no Explorer desktop.
 • Not Linux — though LX zones run Linux binaries; the kernel is illumos.
 • Not a finished desktop — see the status note above and the roadmap.
