kproplog(8) on Solnix vs Linux and the BSDs

On Solnix, kproplog is the illumos /usr/sbin/kproplog, which prints the Kerberos principal update log. Its SYNOPSIS lists only -h and -e num, plus -v in the OPTIONS. Unlike FreeBSD, it has no -R option to reset the log.

What Solnix runs

A default Solnix system runs the illumos kproplog at /usr/sbin/kproplog. No other variants are shipped. The page names /var/krb5/principal.ulog as the update log file.

Differences

Compared withTopicWhat differs
FreeBSD-R reset optionFreeBSD kproplog -R resets the update log and forces full resynchronization. If run on the primary, all replicas request full resyncs. The Solnix page documents no -R, so a script using it will fail on Solnix.

FreeBSDsynopsis and -vThe Solnix SYNOPSIS shows only [-h | -e num], yet OPTIONS documents -v. The FreeBSD SYNOPSIS allows -h, -e num and -v together. The Solnix page does not say whether -v can be combined with the other options.

FreeBSDprivilege neededSolnix says kproplog can only be run on a KDC server by someone with privileges comparable to the superuser. FreeBSD says it requires read access to the update log file.

FreeBSDlog file locationSolnix names /var/krb5/principal.ulog as the update log file. The FreeBSD page does not give a path in the bundle text.

FreeBSDterminologySolnix uses master and slave KDC. FreeBSD uses primary and replica. The behaviour described is the same: with no options, the primary shows a summary plus all entries, and a replica shows only a summary.

FreeBSDENVIRONMENT sectionFreeBSD refers to kerberos for Kerberos environment variables. The Solnix page has no ENVIRONMENT section.

Linux, OpenBSD, NetBSDno counterpart pageThe bundle has no Linux, OpenBSD or NetBSD kproplog page, so nothing can be said about how those systems differ.

Standards

  • POSIX: kproplog is not a POSIX.1-2024 utility.
  • Solnix: Interface Stability: Evolving.

Writing portable scripts

  • Do not use kproplog -R in scripts meant for both systems: only FreeBSD documents it.
  • Use -h, -e num and -v as separate invocations, since the Solnix SYNOPSIS does not show them together.
