lzmainfo(1) on Solnix vs Linux and the BSDs

lzmainfo is not in the Solnix base system; install pkgs.solnix.xz to get it. The Solnix, Linux, FreeBSD and NetBSD pages are word-for-word the same, so the command behaves the same on all four. OpenBSD has no counterpart page in the bundle.

What Solnix runs

Not installed by default: add pkgs.solnix.xz. The bundle lists no other illumos variants and no base-system lzmainfo, so a script that calls lzmainfo on a default Solnix system will fail until the package is installed.

Differences

Compared withTopicWhat differs
Linuxsame programSolnix (pkgs.solnix.xz) and Linux (xz-5.8.4) document the same lzmainfo from XZ Utils. The SYNOPSIS, DESCRIPTION, EXIT STATUS and BUGS text is identical, so no behavioural difference is documented.

FreeBSD, NetBSDsame programFreeBSD 15.1 and NetBSD 11.0 ship pages identical to the Solnix one: same options (--help, --version), same exit statuses, same input handling. The pages document no BSD-specific behaviour.

Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSDavailabilityThe Linux, FreeBSD and NetBSD pages are shipped as part of their XZ Utils documentation. On Solnix the command is in no base package, so it must be installed from pkgs.solnix.xz before use.

all fouroutput unitsOn every system with the page, lzmainfo prints sizes with the suffix MB where MiB (2^20 bytes) would be correct, to stay compatible with LZMA Utils. Scripts that parse the output should expect MB.

all fourexit status and inputExit status is 0 on success and 1 on any error. With no file argument, or with -, lzmainfo reads standard input. It reads only the first 13 bytes. The pages give no further exit codes.

OpenBSDOpenBSDNo OpenBSD lzmainfo page is in the bundle, so the manual text gives no basis for saying whether OpenBSD has this command.

Standards

  • POSIX: lzmainfo is not a POSIX.1-2024 utility.
  • Solnix: The page has no STANDARDS section. It says lzmainfo is included in XZ Utils primarily for backward compatibility with LZMA Utils.

Writing portable scripts

  • Check that lzmainfo exists (for example with command -v) before calling it. On Solnix it is absent unless pkgs.solnix.xz is installed.
  • Do not depend on the exact size text: the pages say it uses the MB suffix for 2^20 bytes, and say nothing more about the output format.

Every difference here is taken from the manual pages linked above: Solnix's published page, Linux (man-pages and the GNU and util-linux manuals), FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD. Each row names its source. Where a manual is silent, this page is too. Compiled 2026-10-26. Found a mistake? Mail hackers@lists.solnix.io.
