pppdump(8) on Solnix vs Linux and the BSDs
On Solnix, pppdump is the illumos pppdump at /usr/bin/pppdump. It reads files written by the record option of pppd and prints them in readable form. The one documented difference from NetBSD is that Solnix has no -a (absolute times) option.

What Solnix runs
A default Solnix system runs the illumos pppdump at /usr/bin/pppdump. No other variants are shipped. The page is published in pkgs.solnix.illumos-world-man.
Differences
| Compared with | Topic | What differs |
|---|---|---|
| NetBSD | -a absolute times | NetBSD pppdump has -a, which prints absolute times. The Solnix SYNOPSIS and OPTIONS have no -a, so a NetBSD script that passes -a will fail or be misparsed on Solnix. The Solnix page does not say how it treats an unknown option.Source: NetBSD pppdump(8) SYNOPSIS and -a; Solnix pppdump(8) SYNOPSIS and OPTIONS |
| NetBSD | timestamps in output | Solnix documents no way to print times of any kind. NetBSD documents -a for absolute times. The manual does not say what time information, if any, Solnix pppdump prints by default.Source: NetBSD pppdump(8) -a; Solnix pppdump(8) DESCRIPTION |
| Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD | no counterpart page | The bundle includes no pppdump page for Linux, FreeBSD or OpenBSD, so nothing can be compared with them. The manual here does not say whether those systems ship the command. Source: Bundle header: only a NetBSD counterpart is listed |
| NetBSD | shared options | -h, -p, -d, -r and -m mru are described in the same words on both systems. Both read the named files in turn, or standard input if none are given, and write to standard output.Source: Solnix pppdump(8) DESCRIPTION; NetBSD pppdump(8) DESCRIPTION |
Standards
- POSIX: pppdump is not a POSIX.1-2024 utility.
Writing portable scripts
- Avoid
-ain portable scripts: only the NetBSD page documents it. Use only-h,-p,-d,-rand-m, which both documented pages describe.
Every difference here is taken from the manual pages linked above: Solnix's published page, Linux (man-pages and the GNU and util-linux manuals), FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD. Each row names its source. Where a manual is silent, this page is too. Compiled 2026-10-26. Found a mistake? Mail hackers@lists.solnix.io.
