repquota(8) on Solnix vs Linux and the BSDs
On Solnix, repquota is the illumos repquota at /usr/sbin/repquota. It reports quotas only for ufs file systems and has just two options, -a and -v. The Linux and BSD -g, -u, -n and -h options are not documented on the Solnix page.

pkgs.solnix.illumos-world-man· illumos.org - Linux: repquota(8) quota-4.11
- FreeBSD: repquota(8) 15.1-RELEASE
- OpenBSD: repquota(8) 8.0
- NetBSD: repquota(8) 11.0
What Solnix runs
A default Solnix system runs the illumos repquota at /usr/sbin/repquota. No other variants are shipped. The page says the target file system must have a file named quotas in its root directory.
Differences
| Compared with | Topic | What differs |
|---|---|---|
| all four | user/group selection | The Solnix page documents no -u or -g and does not say whether group quotas are reported. Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD all have -g and -u. Linux defaults to user quotas only. The BSDs default to both user and group quotas if they exist.Source: Solnix repquota(8) SYNOPSIS, OPTIONS; Linux repquota(8) -g, -u; FreeBSD repquota(8) -g, -u; OpenBSD repquota(8) -g, -u; NetBSD repquota(8) -g, -u |
| all four | -v meaning | On Solnix, -v reports quotas for all users, even those who use no resources. On FreeBSD and OpenBSD, -v prints a header line before each file system's quotas. NetBSD -v does both. Linux -v reports all quotas and is more verbose about quotafile information.Source: Solnix repquota(8) -v; FreeBSD repquota(8) -v; OpenBSD repquota(8) -v; NetBSD repquota(8) -v; Linux repquota(8) -v |
| all four | -a source of file system list | Solnix -a reports mounted ufs file systems with rq in the mntopts field of /etc/vfstab. FreeBSD and OpenBSD use all file systems in /etc/fstab. NetBSD uses all mounted file systems. Linux uses read-write file systems with quotas in /etc/mtab.Source: Solnix repquota(8) -a; FreeBSD repquota(8) -a; OpenBSD repquota(8) -a; NetBSD repquota(8) -a; Linux repquota(8) -a |
| Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD | human-readable output | Solnix has no human-readable option; sizes are in kilobytes. FreeBSD and NetBSD have -h. Linux has -s (--human-readable) and takes optional unit letters. In Linux, -h is not listed.Source: Solnix repquota(8) DESCRIPTION; FreeBSD repquota(8) -h; NetBSD repquota(8) -h; Linux repquota(8) -s |
| Linux, FreeBSD | numeric IDs | Solnix documents no option to skip name lookup. FreeBSD -n and Linux -n (--no-names) print numeric user and group IDs.Source: Solnix repquota(8) OPTIONS; FreeBSD repquota(8) -n; Linux repquota(8) -n |
| Linux | output formats and scripting | Linux repquota offers -O csv or xml output, -p for raw grace-period times in seconds since epoch, and -P for project quotas. The Solnix page documents none of these, so scripts cannot get machine-readable output from it.Source: Linux repquota(8) -O, -p, -P; Solnix repquota(8) OPTIONS |
| NetBSD | quota dump | NetBSD repquota -x, or the quotadump name, exports quota data in a format for quotarestore(8). The Solnix page documents no export mode.Source: NetBSD repquota(8) SYNOPSIS, -x; Solnix repquota(8) OPTIONS |
| all four | file system scope | The Solnix page describes repquota as for ufs file systems and refers to quotactl(4I). The other pages say 'file systems' without naming ufs. Linux -F selects a quota format such as vfsv0 or xfs.Source: Solnix repquota(8) NAME, DESCRIPTION, SEE ALSO; Linux repquota(8) -F; FreeBSD repquota(8) NAME |
| all four | who may run it | Solnix and NetBSD say only the super-user may use or view quotas that are not their own. FreeBSD and OpenBSD also allow members of the operator group. Linux says only the super-user may view quotas that are not their own. | Linux | limit-exceeded markers | Linux repquota prints two characters in the second column showing whether the space and inode limits are exceeded. The Solnix page does not describe this column. Source: Linux repquota(8) DESCRIPTION; Solnix repquota(8) DESCRIPTION |
Standards
- POSIX: repquota is not a POSIX.1-2024 utility.
- Solnix: The page refers to largefile(7) for behaviour with files of 2 Gbyte (2^31 bytes) or more, and to attributes(7).
Writing portable scripts
- Use only the file system name argument (and nothing else) in portable scripts. The set of options, default selection of user or group quotas, and
-vmeaning all differ between Solnix, Linux and the BSDs. - Do not parse the output. The page documents no output format on Solnix or the BSDs, and only Linux offers csv or xml with
-O.
Every difference here is taken from the manual pages linked above: Solnix's published page, Linux (man-pages and the GNU and util-linux manuals), FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD. Each row names its source. Where a manual is silent, this page is too. Compiled 2026-10-26. Found a mistake? Mail hackers@lists.solnix.io.
