tmux(1) on Solnix vs Linux and the BSDs

tmux is not in the Solnix base system: install pkgs.solnix.tmux. The Solnix page matches the OpenBSD and NetBSD pages for most options. The differences are that it has no -h, it documents an -A flag that the BSD synopses lack, and its default-command wording and config search path differ.

What Solnix runs

Not installed by default: add pkgs.solnix.tmux. No other illumos variants are shipped. The bundle contains no illumos tmux page, so there is nothing to compare against a base-system implementation.

Differences

Compared withTopicWhat differs
OpenBSD, NetBSD-h usage flagOpenBSD and NetBSD tmux accept -h to print usage information and exit. The Solnix SYNOPSIS and option list have no -h.

OpenBSDuser config search pathSolnix and NetBSD tmux read /etc/tmux.conf, then ~/.tmux.conf or $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/tmux/tmux.conf. OpenBSD documents only /etc/tmux.conf and ~/.tmux.conf, with no XDG path.
Source: Solnix tmux(1) -f; NetBSD tmux(1) -f; OpenBSD tmux(1) -f
OpenBSD, NetBSDcommand used when none is givenSolnix says new-session is assumed when no command is given. OpenBSD and NetBSD say the command in default-client-command is assumed, which defaults to new-session.

OpenBSD, NetBSD-A listed in Solnix flagsThe extracted flag list for Solnix includes -A, which the OpenBSD and NetBSD lists lack. The visible Solnix SYNOPSIS and option text do not show -A, so the bundle does not say what it does. Check the installed page before relying on it.

OpenBSD, NetBSDoption documentationThe OpenBSD and NetBSD OPTIONS sections say each option has scopes and a type, and that flag-type options accept 1, on, yes, 0, off or no. The Solnix OPTIONS text describes four option types (server, session, window, pane) and says a flag value is on, off, or omitted to toggle.

Linuxno Linux page in the bundleThe bundle has no Linux tmux page, so no claim is made about Linux differences. The Solnix text shows no Linux-specific behaviour.

OpenBSD, NetBSDshared behaviourSolnix, OpenBSD and NetBSD document the same socket location (TMUX_TMPDIR or /tmp, in a tmux-UID directory), the same -L and -S rules, SIGUSR1 to recreate the socket, and SIGUSR2 to toggle logging.

Standards

  • POSIX: tmux is not a POSIX.1-2024 utility.

Writing portable scripts

  • Do not rely on tmux -h: Solnix does not document it. Use tmux -V to check the version.
  • Do not rely on the XDG config path. Put the config in ~/.tmux.conf, or pass -f file, so it works on OpenBSD too.

Every difference here is taken from the manual pages linked above: Solnix's published page, Linux (man-pages and the GNU and util-linux manuals), FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD. Each row names its source. Where a manual is silent, this page is too. Compiled 2026-10-26. Found a mistake? Mail hackers@lists.solnix.io.
