yppush(8) on Solnix vs Linux and the BSDs
On Solnix, yppush is the illumos program at /usr/lib/netsvc/yp/yppush. It is not on the normal PATH directories. Unlike the BSD versions it has -p #parallel-xfrs for parallel transfers, whereas FreeBSD uses -j for that and -p for the map path.

- Solnix: yppush(8) from
pkgs.solnix.illumos-world-man· illumos.org - FreeBSD: yppush(8) 15.1-RELEASE
- OpenBSD: yppush(8) 8.0
- NetBSD: yppush(8) 11.0
What Solnix runs
A default Solnix system runs the illumos yppush, installed at /usr/lib/netsvc/yp/yppush rather than /usr/bin, /usr/sbin or /sbin. No other variants are shipped. Call it by full path or add that directory to PATH.
Differences
| Compared with | Topic | What differs |
|---|---|---|
| FreeBSD | -p meaning | Solnix -p takes a number of parallel transfers. FreeBSD -p takes an alternate path for the local NIS maps (default /var/yp). A FreeBSD script using -p path fails or misbehaves on Solnix.Source: Solnix yppush(8) -p #parallel-xfrs; FreeBSD yppush(8) -p path |
| FreeBSD | parallel transfers flag | FreeBSD uses -j #parallel jobs for parallel transfers. Solnix has no -j and uses -p instead. The manual says FreeBSD transfers are serial by default.Source: FreeBSD yppush(8) -j; Solnix yppush(8) SYNOPSIS, -p |
| OpenBSD, NetBSD | no parallel option | OpenBSD and NetBSD yppush have only -v, -d and -h. Neither documents a way to run transfers in parallel, which Solnix -p provides.Source: OpenBSD yppush(8) SYNOPSIS; NetBSD yppush(8) SYNOPSIS; Solnix yppush(8) -p |
| FreeBSD | timeout option | FreeBSD has -t timeout, the seconds to wait for a slave's response before moving to the next. The Solnix page has no -t. It mentions only that a timeout period on responses can expire.Source: FreeBSD yppush(8) -t; Solnix yppush(8) DESCRIPTION |
| FreeBSD | -h with multiple hosts | FreeBSD allows -h more than once to name several hosts. The Solnix page says -h propagates only to the named host and does not mention repetition.Source: FreeBSD yppush(8) -h; Solnix yppush(8) -h |
| FreeBSD | invoked by Makefile | FreeBSD says /var/yp/Makefile does not call yppush until NOPUSH=True is commented out. The Solnix page says only that the Makefile in /var/yp normally runs it after a master database change, and does not mention NOPUSH.Source: FreeBSD yppush(8) DESCRIPTION; Solnix yppush(8) DESCRIPTION |
| FreeBSD | where messages go | FreeBSD prints errors received from ypxfr(8) to stderr. The Solnix page says results can be printed to stdout, and with -v it prints a message per server call and per response. Without -v only errors are printed.Source: FreeBSD yppush(8) DESCRIPTION; Solnix yppush(8) DESCRIPTION, -v |
| FreeBSD | -v repeated | On FreeBSD, giving -v twice makes yppush more verbose. The Solnix page documents -v as a single verbose flag only.Source: FreeBSD yppush(8) -v; Solnix yppush(8) -v |
| OpenBSD | master told to reread maps | OpenBSD yppush first tells the master server to reread its Berkeley DB map files, and also pushes the map to the master itself, which the page says only slows operation. The Solnix page describes neither behaviour. Source: OpenBSD yppush(8) DESCRIPTION, BUGS; Solnix yppush(8) DESCRIPTION |
| FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD | NIS v1 servers | On Solnix, yppush falls back to the v1 protocol for a v1 server, but cannot tell whether the transfer happened, so you must check later. FreeBSD supports only NIS v2 systems. The OpenBSD and NetBSD pages do not say. Source: Solnix yppush(8) BUGS; FreeBSD yppush(8) BUGS |
| FreeBSD | default domain | FreeBSD says the local host's NIS domain is the default for -d, and that -d is required if the domain name is not set. The Solnix page says only that -d specifies a domain.Source: FreeBSD yppush(8) -d; Solnix yppush(8) -d |
Standards
- POSIX: yppush is not a POSIX.1-2024 utility.
Writing portable scripts
- Use only
-v,-ddomain,-hhost and the mapname argument in portable scripts. They are the options all four systems document. Do not use-por-j, which differ between Solnix and FreeBSD. - On Solnix, call
/usr/lib/netsvc/yp/yppushby full path. It is not in/usr/bin,/usr/sbinor/sbin.
Every difference here is taken from the manual pages linked above: Solnix's published page, Linux (man-pages and the GNU and util-linux manuals), FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD. Each row names its source. Where a manual is silent, this page is too. Compiled 2026-10-26. Found a mistake? Mail hackers@lists.solnix.io.
