bashbug(1) on Solnix vs Linux and the BSDs

bashbug is the bash bug-report script, and the Solnix page is word-for-word the same as the Linux page. The bundle has no BSD counterpart, so the manual says nothing about BSD systems.

What Solnix runs

A default Solnix system runs bash from the base system packages. The page is published by pkgs.solnix.bash. No other variants are shipped.

Differences

Compared withTopicWhat differs
Linuxsame programThe Solnix and Linux bashbug pages have the same synopsis (bashbug [--version] [--help] [email-address]), the same description and the same environment variables (EDITOR, HOME, TMPDIR). The bundle shows no behavioural difference between them.

FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSDno BSD counterpart in the bundleThe bundle includes no FreeBSD, OpenBSD or NetBSD bashbug page. The manual here does not say whether bashbug exists on those systems or how it behaves there.
Source: Bundle header: only a linux counterpart is listed
Linuxmail destination and fallback fileBoth Solnix and Linux mail the report to bug-bash@gnu.org, or to email-address if given. If mailing fails, both save the report as dead.bashbug in the invoking user's home directory, found through HOME.

Linuxeditor selectionBoth Solnix and Linux use EDITOR. If it is unset, they try alternative editors, including emacs, and then run vi. The pages do not list the other editors.

Standards

  • POSIX: bashbug is not a POSIX.1-2024 utility.

Writing portable scripts

  • Do not rely on bashbug in portable scripts: it is not a POSIX.1-2024 utility, and the bundle shows no BSD page for it. Set EDITOR explicitly if you run it non-interactively.

Every difference here is taken from the manual pages linked above: Solnix's published page, Linux (man-pages and the GNU and util-linux manuals), FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD. Each row names its source. Where a manual is silent, this page is too. Compiled 2026-10-26. Found a mistake? Mail hackers@lists.solnix.io.
