curl-config(1) on Solnix vs Linux and the BSDs

curl-config on Solnix is the upstream curl project's script, published by pkgs.solnix.curl. Its option list is identical to the Linux curl-config page in the bundle. The bundle has no FreeBSD, OpenBSD or NetBSD curl-config page, so no BSD comparison can be made from it.

What Solnix runs

The header says the command on PATH is curl, in the base system packages. No other illumos variants are shipped. The Solnix page is dated 2026-10-24 and the Linux page 2026-09-02, but the option text is the same apart from line wrapping and small wording changes.

Differences

Compared withTopicWhat differs
Linuxsame programThe Solnix and Linux curl-config pages document the same 14 options (--ca, --cc, --cflags, --checkfor, --configure, --feature, --help, --libs, --prefix, --protocols, --ssl-backends, --static-libs, --version, --vernum). Their meanings, version notes and the 0/1 --checkfor exit status read the same.

FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSDno BSD counterpart in the bundleThe bundle has no curl-config page for FreeBSD, OpenBSD or NetBSD. The manual text here does not say whether those systems ship curl-config or what options it accepts. Check the local installation before relying on it.
Source: Bundle header lists only a Linux counterpart; no BSD sections present
Linuxpage dateThe Solnix page is dated 2026-10-24 and the Linux page 2026-09-02, and the Linux counterpart is labelled curl-8.22.0. The option descriptions are the same, so the dates do not indicate a documented behaviour change.

Standards

  • POSIX: curl-config is not a POSIX.1-2024 utility.

Writing portable scripts

  • Do not assume the order of lines from --feature or --protocols. The manual says no particular order is guaranteed, and the entries are newline-separated.
  • Use --checkfor with its exit status (0 if new enough, 1 if not) to test the libcurl version. It was added in 7.15.4, so it is not in older versions.

Every difference here is taken from the manual pages linked above: Solnix's published page, Linux (man-pages and the GNU and util-linux manuals), FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD. Each row names its source. Where a manual is silent, this page is too. Compiled 2026-10-26. Found a mistake? Mail hackers@lists.solnix.io.
