kdestroy(1) on Solnix vs Linux and the BSDs
On Solnix, kdestroy is the illumos kdestroy at /usr/bin/kdestroy. It takes only -q and -c cache_name. FreeBSD adds -A and -p for cache collections, and NetBSD uses a different option set (long options, --credential, --no-unlog) with no -q.

What Solnix runs
A default Solnix system runs the illumos kdestroy at /usr/bin/kdestroy, published in pkgs.solnix.illumos-world-man. No other variants are shipped. The page's ATTRIBUTES give Interface Stability and Command arguments as Evolving, and Command output as Unstable.
Differences
| Compared with | Topic | What differs |
|---|---|---|
| FreeBSD | -A (destroy all caches) | FreeBSD kdestroy -A destroys all caches in the collection, if one is available. Solnix kdestroy has no -A and its page mentions no cache collection. It destroys one cache: the default, or the one named with -c.Source: FreeBSD kdestroy(1) -A; Solnix kdestroy(1) SYNOPSIS, OPTIONS |
| FreeBSD | -p (destroy cache by principal) | FreeBSD kdestroy -p princ_name destroys the cache for that principal when a cache collection is available. Solnix has no -p, so a script using it fails on Solnix.Source: FreeBSD kdestroy(1) -p; Solnix kdestroy(1) SYNOPSIS |
| NetBSD | -A means something different, no -q | NetBSD -A (or --all) removes all credential caches. Solnix has no -A. Solnix -q suppresses the failure beep, but the NetBSD page documents no -q, so a script using -q may fail on NetBSD.Source: NetBSD kdestroy(1) -A, --all, SYNOPSIS; Solnix kdestroy(1) -q |
| NetBSD | removing a single credential | NetBSD --credential=principal removes one principal's credential from the cache and leaves the cache in place. Solnix has no equivalent. It overwrites the whole specified cache and then removes it.Source: NetBSD kdestroy(1) DESCRIPTION, --credential; Solnix kdestroy(1) DESCRIPTION |
| NetBSD | AFS tokens and v4 tickets | NetBSD kdestroy has --no-unlog (keep AFS tokens) and --no-delete-v4 (keep v4 tickets). Solnix has neither option, and its page does not mention AFS tokens or v4 tickets.Source: NetBSD kdestroy(1) --no-unlog, --no-delete-v4; Solnix kdestroy(1) OPTIONS |
| NetBSD | long options and -c spelling | NetBSD documents long options (--cache=cachefile, --version, --help). Solnix documents only the short options -c cache_name and -q. The NetBSD page also writes some options with a single dash, such as -cache=cachefile.Source: NetBSD kdestroy(1) SYNOPSIS, OPTIONS; Solnix kdestroy(1) SYNOPSIS |
| FreeBSD, NetBSD | KRB5CCNAME | Solnix documents KRB5CCNAME as the credentials cache location (syntax in krb5envvar(7)). FreeBSD also says that, if set, it names the default cache. The NetBSD page does not mention KRB5CCNAME. Source: Solnix kdestroy(1) ENVIRONMENT VARIABLES; FreeBSD kdestroy(1) -c; NetBSD kdestroy(1) (no environment section) |
| FreeBSD, NetBSD | missing cache and logout use | The Solnix page says kdestroy displays a message if the cache does not exist, prints a success or failure message, and can go in .logout. The FreeBSD and NetBSD pages say none of this. Source: Solnix kdestroy(1) DESCRIPTION; FreeBSD kdestroy(1) DESCRIPTION; NetBSD kdestroy(1) DESCRIPTION |
| FreeBSD, NetBSD | other caches left behind | The Solnix BUGS section says only the specified cache is destroyed. Separate caches for root instance and password-changing tickets are not destroyed. The FreeBSD and NetBSD pages do not say this. Source: Solnix kdestroy(1) BUGS |
Standards
- POSIX: kdestroy is not a POSIX.1-2024 utility.
- Solnix: Interface Stability: Evolving for command arguments; Unstable for command output.
Writing portable scripts
- Use only kdestroy and
-ccache_name in portable scripts; the FreeBSD and Solnix pages document-c, and the NetBSD page documents it too. - Do not rely on
-q,-Aor-p:-qis missing from the NetBSD page,-Aand-pare missing on Solnix (-palso on NetBSD), and-Ameans different things where it exists. Do not parse kdestroy output, which is Unstable on Solnix.
Every difference here is taken from the manual pages linked above: Solnix's published page, Linux (man-pages and the GNU and util-linux manuals), FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD. Each row names its source. Where a manual is silent, this page is too. Compiled 2026-10-26. Found a mistake? Mail hackers@lists.solnix.io.
