logout(1) on Solnix vs Linux and the BSDs
On Solnix, logout is a csh built-in that ends a login shell, not a separate binary. The Solnix page documents only the csh form. FreeBSD has no logout(1) page of its own: its builtin(1) index lists logout as a csh-only built-in.

What Solnix runs
No standalone logout binary is on PATH on a default Solnix system. The Solnix page's SYNOPSIS and DESCRIPTION give only the csh form: 'Terminate a login shell.' The page does not say whether sh or ksh93 provide a logout built-in, although the header lists them as shells. No other variants are shipped.
Differences
| Compared with | Topic | What differs |
|---|---|---|
| FreeBSD | page content | The FreeBSD logout(1) page is the builtin(1) index of shell built-ins, not a page about logout itself. The Solnix logout(1) page is a short description of the csh built-in only. Source: FreeBSD logout(1) NAME and DESCRIPTION (index of builtin commands); Solnix logout(1) NAME, SYNOPSIS |
| FreeBSD | which shells provide logout | On FreeBSD, logout is built into csh(1) only. It is not in sh(1) and not a standalone utility. The Solnix page lists logout only under the csh heading. Source: FreeBSD logout(1) Commands table, row 'logout' (Standalone No, csh Yes, sh No); Solnix logout(1) SYNOPSIS csh |
| FreeBSD | behaviour detail | Solnix documents what logout does: it terminates a login shell. The FreeBSD page only indexes the command and does not describe its behaviour, so it gives no behaviour to compare, such as what happens in a non-login shell. Source: Solnix logout(1) DESCRIPTION; FreeBSD logout(1) Commands table |
| Linux, OpenBSD, NetBSD | no counterpart page | The bundle contains no logout page for Linux, OpenBSD or NetBSD, so the manual text here supports no comparison with them. Source: Bundle header lists only a freebsd counterpart |
Standards
- POSIX: logout is not a POSIX.1-2024 utility.
- Solnix: The Solnix page's SEE ALSO points to attributes(7), but the trimmed page text shows no ATTRIBUTES or stability table.
Writing portable scripts
- Do not rely on logout in sh scripts: the FreeBSD index lists it as a csh-only built-in. Use exit to leave a shell; FreeBSD lists exit in both csh and sh.
Every difference here is taken from the manual pages linked above: Solnix's published page, Linux (man-pages and the GNU and util-linux manuals), FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD. Each row names its source. Where a manual is silent, this page is too. Compiled 2026-10-26. Found a mistake? Mail hackers@lists.solnix.io.
