quot(8) on Solnix vs Linux and the BSDs
On Solnix, quot is the illumos quot at /usr/sbin/quot. It reports blocks owned per user, in 1024-byte blocks. The FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD pages report 512-byte blocks unless -k is given, and Solnix has no -k.

What Solnix runs
A default Solnix system runs the illumos quot at /usr/sbin/quot. No other variants are shipped. The page says only the super-user can use it.
Differences
| Compared with | Topic | What differs |
|---|---|---|
| FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD | block unit and -k | Solnix quot counts 1024-byte blocks and has no -k. FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD report 512-byte blocks by default, and -k switches them to kilobytes.Source: Solnix quot(8) DESCRIPTION, SYNOPSIS; FreeBSD quot(8) -k; OpenBSD quot(8) -k; NetBSD quot(8) -k |
| FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD | BLOCKSIZE environment variable | The FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD pages say BLOCKSIZE sets the unit when -k is not given. The Solnix page documents no environment variables.Source: FreeBSD/OpenBSD/NetBSD quot(8) ENVIRONMENT; Solnix quot(8) (no ENVIRONMENT section) |
| FreeBSD | -h missing on FreeBSD | FreeBSD quot has no -h. Solnix, OpenBSD and NetBSD accept -h, which estimates blocks from file size and ignores holes.Source: FreeBSD quot(8) SYNOPSIS; Solnix quot(8) -h; OpenBSD quot(8) -h; NetBSD quot(8) -h |
| FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD | -n pipeline and options it conflicts with | Solnix -n reads a list of files from stdin, as made by ncheck, and is incompatible with all other options. FreeBSD says -n is exclusive with -c only, and the OpenBSD and NetBSD pages state no restriction.Source: Solnix quot(8) -n; FreeBSD quot(8) -c, -n; OpenBSD quot(8) -n; NetBSD quot(8) -n |
| FreeBSD | ncheck availability | The Solnix -n example pipes ncheck into quot. The FreeBSD page says ncheck does not exist there and uses ls -i instead.Source: Solnix quot(8) -n; FreeBSD quot(8) -n, BUGS |
| FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD | -f combined with other options | Solnix says -f is incompatible with -c and -v. FreeBSD says -f has no effect when combined with -c or -n. OpenBSD and NetBSD state no restriction.Source: Solnix quot(8) -f; FreeBSD quot(8) -f; OpenBSD quot(8) -f; NetBSD quot(8) -f |
| FreeBSD | -v combined with other options | FreeBSD says -v has no effect with -c or -n. The Solnix page states no such rule, but says -f cannot be used with -v and -n cannot be used with any other option.Source: FreeBSD quot(8) -v; Solnix quot(8) -f, -n, -v |
| FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD | -v output columns | Solnix -v adds three columns of blocks not accessed in 30, 60 and 90 days. The BSD pages describe the added figures as numbers of files.Source: Solnix quot(8) -v; FreeBSD quot(8) -v; OpenBSD quot(8) -v; NetBSD quot(8) -v |
| FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD | 2048-block limit and large files | Solnix counts any file over 2048 blocks as a 2048-block file in the size breakdown, though the total stays correct. It also refers to largefile(7) for files of 2 Gbyte or more. The BSD pages mention neither. Source: Solnix quot(8) DESCRIPTION, USAGE; FreeBSD/OpenBSD/NetBSD quot(8) DESCRIPTION |
| FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD | exit status | Solnix documents exit 0 on success and 32 on any error. The FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD pages have no EXIT STATUS section. Source: Solnix quot(8) EXIT STATUS; FreeBSD/OpenBSD/NetBSD quot(8) (no EXIT STATUS section) |
| FreeBSD | file system type | FreeBSD quot gathers statistics from ffs(7) file systems. The Solnix page takes a mount point and names no file system type. Source: FreeBSD quot(8) DESCRIPTION; Solnix quot(8) OPERANDS |

- POSIX: quot is not a POSIX.1-2024 utility.
Writing portable scripts
- Do not rely on
-kor BLOCKSIZE: Solnix lacks both, and FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD default to 512-byte blocks. Convert units yourself. - Use
-c,-fand-vonly on their own, as the pages restrict their combinations differently. Avoid-hand-nin portable scripts.
Every difference here is taken from the manual pages linked above: Solnix's published page, Linux (man-pages and the GNU and util-linux manuals), FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD.
