recode-sr-latin(1) on Solnix vs Linux and the BSDs

recode-sr-latin is the GNU gettext tool that converts Serbian text from Cyrillic to Latin script, reading standard input and writing standard output. It is not in the Solnix base system: install pkgs.solnix.gettext. The Solnix and Linux pages are the same program.

What Solnix runs

Not installed by default: add pkgs.solnix.gettext. The Solnix page is built from GNU gettext-tools 0.22.5 and no other illumos variants are shipped.

Differences

Compared withTopicWhat differs
Linuxsame programSolnix and Linux both document the GNU gettext recode-sr-latin with the same synopsis, the same description and the same two options (-h/--help, -V/--version). The only visible difference is the version: the Solnix page is gettext-tools 0.22.5 (February 2024), the Linux page gettext-tools 1.0 (January 2026).

Standards

  • POSIX: recode-sr-latin is not a POSIX.1-2024 utility.

Writing portable scripts

  • Check that recode-sr-latin is on PATH before calling it, and install pkgs.solnix.gettext on Solnix if it is not.
  • Pass data through stdin and stdout (recode-sr-latin < in.txt > out.txt) rather than naming files, since the page documents no file arguments.

Every difference here is taken from the manual pages linked above: Solnix's published page, Linux (man-pages and the GNU and util-linux manuals), FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD. Each row names its source. Where a manual is silent, this page is too. Compiled 2026-10-26. Found a mistake? Mail hackers@lists.solnix.io.
