ssh(1) on Solnix vs Linux and the BSDs
On Solnix, ssh is the OpenSSH client from pkgs.solnix.openssh, the same program family as on Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD. In the parts of the pages the bundle shows, the one visible difference is that the Solnix synopsis has no -Z, which the Linux and OpenBSD synopses list.
The manual pages
What Solnix runs
A default Solnix system runs the OpenSSH ssh from pkgs.solnix.openssh, which is part of the base system packages. No other variants are shipped. The Solnix page does not state an OpenSSH version.
Differences
| Compared with | Topic | What differs |
|---|---|---|
| all four | same OpenSSH client | All five pages are titled 'OpenSSH remote login client'. The shown text for -4, -6, -A, -a, -B, -b, -C, -c, -D, -E, -e, -F, -f, -G and -g matches. Configuration paths match too: /etc/ssh/ssh_config and ~/.ssh/config.Source: Solnix, Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD ssh(1) NAME, DESCRIPTION, -F |
| Linux, OpenBSD | -Z flag | The Linux and OpenBSD synopses list -Z. The Solnix synopsis and option list do not. The shown text does not say what -Z does (the pages are trimmed), so a script using -Z may fail on Solnix.Source: Linux ssh(1) SYNOPSIS [-46AaCfGgKkMNnqsTtVvXxYyZ]; OpenBSD ssh(1) SYNOPSIS; Solnix ssh(1) SYNOPSIS [-46AaCfGgKkMNnqsTtVvXxYy] |
| FreeBSD, NetBSD | -Z flag absent | The FreeBSD and NetBSD synopses have no -Z, the same as Solnix. Their option sets match Solnix in the single-letter flag list.Source: FreeBSD ssh(1) SYNOPSIS; NetBSD ssh(1) SYNOPSIS; Solnix ssh(1) SYNOPSIS |
| Linux | version | The Linux page is for openssh-10.5p1. The Solnix page does not state its OpenSSH version, so the manual cannot confirm that newer options present on Linux exist on Solnix. Source: Header COUNTERPART linux: ssh(1) [Linux (openssh-10.5p1)]; Solnix ssh(1) (no version stated) |
Standards
- POSIX: ssh is not a POSIX.1-2024 utility.
Writing portable scripts
- Do not use
-Zin portable scripts: it is not in the Solnix, FreeBSD or NetBSD synopses. - Keep to options common to all five synopses, such as
-o,-i,-p,-J,-L,-Rand-F, and put other settings in ssh_config(5) via-o.
Every difference here is taken from the manual pages linked above: Solnix's published page, Linux (man-pages and the GNU and util-linux manuals), FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD. Each row names its source. Where a manual is silent, this page is too. Compiled 2026-10-26. Found a mistake? Mail hackers@lists.solnix.io.
