suspend(1) on Solnix vs Linux and the BSDs
On Solnix, suspend is a shell built-in in sh, csh and ksh, not a separate binary. It stops the current shell, except a login shell in sh and ksh. The FreeBSD and NetBSD pages are shell indexes or the csh page, and neither documents the sh/ksh behaviour.
The manual pages
- Solnix: suspend(1) from
pkgs.solnix.illumos-world-man· illumos.org - FreeBSD: suspend(1) 15.1-RELEASE
- NetBSD: suspend(1) 11.0
What Solnix runs
There is no /usr/bin/suspend. The built-in is documented for sh, csh and ksh. No other variants are shipped. In sh and ksh it does not stop a login shell. The csh text does not mention that exception.
Differences
| Compared with | Topic | What differs |
|---|---|---|
| FreeBSD | which shells have suspend | On FreeBSD, suspend is a built-in of csh only. The index table marks it No for sh and No for standalone. Solnix documents suspend in sh, csh and ksh. Source: FreeBSD suspend(1) (builtin index) Commands table, row suspend; Solnix suspend(1) SYNOPSIS |
| FreeBSD, NetBSD | sh and ksh suspend | A Solnix sh or ksh script or session can use suspend. The FreeBSD table shows no suspend in sh. The bundle's FreeBSD and NetBSD texts do not document suspend for any sh or ksh. Source: Solnix suspend(1) DESCRIPTION sh, ksh; FreeBSD suspend(1) Commands table (sh(1) column: No) |
| FreeBSD, NetBSD | login shell exception | Solnix sh and ksh suspend does nothing for a login shell. The FreeBSD index and the visible NetBSD csh text do not describe any suspend login-shell rule. Source: Solnix suspend(1) DESCRIPTION sh, ksh; FreeBSD suspend(1) Commands table; NetBSD suspend(1) (csh page, trimmed) |
| NetBSD | manual coverage | The NetBSD page for suspend(1) is the csh(1) manual. The excerpt covers ^Z stopping the current job but, in the part shown, does not describe a suspend command. Check the full csh(1) page. Source: NetBSD suspend(1) NAME, Jobs (^Z sends a STOP signal); text trimmed in bundle |
| Linux | Linux | No Linux page is in the bundle, so the manual cannot be compared. Solnix suspend is a shell built-in, so any Linux comparison depends on the shell used. Source: Bundle header: no linux COUNTERPART listed |
| OpenBSD | OpenBSD | No OpenBSD page is in the bundle, so the manual cannot be compared. Source: Bundle header: no openbsd COUNTERPART listed |
Standards
- POSIX: suspend is not a POSIX.1-2024 utility.
Writing portable scripts
- Do not use suspend in portable scripts. On FreeBSD it exists only in csh, and it is not in the POSIX.1-2024 utility list.
Every difference here is taken from the manual pages linked above: Solnix's published page, Linux (man-pages and the GNU and util-linux manuals), FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD. Each row names its source. Where a manual is silent, this page is too. Compiled 2026-10-26. Found a mistake? Mail hackers@lists.solnix.io.
