tcpdmatch(8) on Solnix vs Linux and the BSDs
On Solnix, tcpdmatch is the illumos tcp wrapper oracle at /usr/sbin/tcpdmatch. It has the same -d and -i options as FreeBSD and NetBSD. The differences are in the configuration files it mentions and in the pages' cross-references to SMF.
The manual pages
- Solnix: tcpdmatch(8) from
pkgs.solnix.illumos-world-man· illumos.org - FreeBSD: tcpdmatch(8) 15.1-RELEASE
- NetBSD: tcpdmatch(8) 11.0
What Solnix runs
A default Solnix system runs the illumos tcpdmatch at /usr/sbin/tcpdmatch. No other variants are shipped. The page's SEE ALSO points to inetadm(8) for managing inetd services in the Service Management Framework.
Differences
| Compared with | Topic | What differs |
|---|---|---|
| FreeBSD, NetBSD | network configuration file searched | The Solnix page says tcpdmatch extracts extra information from the inetd network configuration file only. FreeBSD and NetBSD say it reads an inetd or tlid configuration file. Source: Solnix tcpdmatch(8) DESCRIPTION; FreeBSD tcpdmatch(8) DESCRIPTION; NetBSD tcpdmatch(8) DESCRIPTION |
| FreeBSD, NetBSD | -i inet_conf | On Solnix, -i is for when tcpdmatch cannot find inetd.conf. FreeBSD and NetBSD say it is also for when tcpdmatch cannot find tlid.conf. The option letter and argument are the same on all three.Source: Solnix tcpdmatch(8) -i; FreeBSD tcpdmatch(8) -i; NetBSD tcpdmatch(8) -i |
| FreeBSD | tlid.conf reference | The FreeBSD SEE ALSO lists tlid.conf(5). The Solnix page does not. Solnix lists inetadm(8) instead. Source: FreeBSD tcpdmatch(8) SEE ALSO; Solnix tcpdmatch(8) SEE ALSO |
| all four | inetd under SMF | The Solnix page points to inetadm(8) for managing inetd services in the Service Management Framework, and to inetd(8) for invoking tcpd through libwrap. The FreeBSD and NetBSD pages do not mention either. Source: Solnix tcpdmatch(8) SEE ALSO; FreeBSD tcpdmatch(8) SEE ALSO; NetBSD tcpdmatch(8) SEE ALSO |
| NetBSD | known FQDN bug | The NetBSD page has a BUGS section. A fully qualified hostname given as the client is recognised only as an IPv4 or only as an IPv6 address, not both. The Solnix page has no BUGS section, so it does not say whether this applies. Source: NetBSD tcpdmatch(8) BUGS; Solnix tcpdmatch(8) (no BUGS section) |
| FreeBSD | SYNOPSIS section | The FreeBSD page text in the bundle has no SYNOPSIS section. Solnix and NetBSD document two forms: daemon client, and daemon[@server] [user@]client. Source: FreeBSD tcpdmatch(8) (no SYNOPSIS); Solnix tcpdmatch(8) SYNOPSIS; NetBSD tcpdmatch(8) SYNOPSIS |
| Linux | Linux | No Linux counterpart page is in the bundle, so the manual does not say how Linux compares. Source: Bundle header lists only FreeBSD and NetBSD counterparts |
Standards
- POSIX: tcpdmatch is not a POSIX.1-2024 utility.
- Solnix: Interface Stability: Committed.
Writing portable scripts
- Use only
-dand-iinet_conf, which are the same on Solnix, FreeBSD and NetBSD. Pass-iexplicitly if the inetd configuration file is not found.
Every difference here is taken from the manual pages linked above: Solnix's published page, Linux (man-pages and the GNU and util-linux manuals), FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD. Each row names its source. Where a manual is silent, this page is too. Compiled 2026-10-26. Found a mistake? Mail hackers@lists.solnix.io.
