texi2any(1) on Solnix vs Linux and the BSDs
texi2any is not in the Solnix base system: install pkgs.solnix.texinfo to get it. The Solnix page text in the bundle is empty, so only the Linux (texinfo 7.2) page can be described. No BSD counterpart page is in the bundle.
The manual pages
- Solnix: texi2any(1) from
pkgs.solnix.texinfo - Linux: texi2any(1) texinfo-7.2
What Solnix runs
Not installed by default: add pkgs.solnix.texinfo. The bundle has no Solnix page text and no illumos variant, so the Solnix options, defaults and behaviour cannot be compared. The manual text here does not say whether the package is the same texinfo release as Linux's 7.2.
Differences
| Compared with | Topic | What differs |
|---|---|---|
| Linux | availability on Solnix | On Solnix texi2any is not on PATH by default; it comes from pkgs.solnix.texinfo. The Solnix page text in the bundle is empty, so it is not known whether options match the Linux texinfo 7.2 page. Source: Bundle header (none: install pkgs.solnix.texinfo); Solnix texi2any(1) section empty |
| FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD | no BSD counterpart in bundle | The bundle includes no FreeBSD, OpenBSD or NetBSD page for texi2any or makeinfo. The manual does not say whether, or how, those systems provide it. Source: Bundle header (only a linux counterpart listed) |
| Linux | makeinfo and texi2any names | On Linux, the program is commonly installed as both makeinfo and texi2any, with identical behaviour regardless of installed name. The SYNOPSIS shows makeinfo. Whether Solnix installs both names is not stated. Source: Linux texi2any(1) SYNOPSIS, DESCRIPTION |
| Linux | default output format | By default it produces Info files. Other formats are chosen with --docbook, --html, --epub3, --latex, --plaintext, --xml, or --dvi/--dvipdf/--ps/--pdf. The last group calls texi2dvi after checking the input.Source: Linux texi2any(1) DESCRIPTION, Output format selection |
| Linux | --no-headers writes to stdout | With Info output, --no-headers drops node separators, Node: lines and menus, and writes to standard output by default. Pass -o to write a file.Source: Linux texi2any(1) --no-headers, -o |
| Linux | -o with split output | With split output, -o DEST creates DEST as a directory. With non-split output, DEST is a directory if it exists as one or ends with /, otherwise it is the output file name.Source: Linux texi2any(1) -o, --output |
| Linux | defaults | Documented defaults: error limit 100, Info fill column 72, paragraph indent 3, Info split size 300000, footnote style end, document language C, section numbering on, encoding enabled. Source: Linux texi2any(1) --error-limit, --fill-column, --paragraph-indent, --split-size, --footnote-style, --document-language, --[no-]number-sections, --enable-encoding |
| Linux | conditional processing defaults | The @if... conditionals default on only for the selected output format. Each --no-ifFORMAT option also makes @ifnotFORMAT text get processed.Source: Linux texi2any(1) Conditional processing in input |
Standards
- POSIX: texi2any is not a POSIX.1-2024 utility.
Writing portable scripts
- Check that texi2any or makeinfo is on PATH before use. On Solnix install pkgs.solnix.texinfo first.
- Pass the output format and
-oexplicitly in scripts, instead of relying on the Info default or on stdout behaviour.
Every difference here is taken from the manual pages linked above: Solnix's published page, Linux (man-pages and the GNU and util-linux manuals), FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD. Each row names its source. Where a manual is silent, this page is too. Compiled 2026-10-26. Found a mistake? Mail hackers@lists.solnix.io.
