wget(1) on Solnix vs Linux and the BSDs
On a default Solnix system, wget is GNU Wget from the base system packages (pkgs.solnix.wget). Its page matches the Linux wget(1) page (wget-1.25.0) in every section the bundle shows, so a Linux wget script should run unchanged. The bundle has no FreeBSD, OpenBSD or NetBSD wget page.
The manual pages
What Solnix runs
The command on PATH is GNU Wget, published as pkgs.solnix.wget and listed as part of the base system packages. No other variants are shipped. The bundle does not state which Wget version the Solnix page documents.
Differences
| Compared with | Topic | What differs |
|---|---|---|
| Linux | same program | Solnix and Linux both document GNU Wget with the same synopsis, `wget [option]... [URL]...`. The Option Syntax, Basic Startup Options and Logging and Input File Options sections are identical in the visible text, apart from line wrapping. Source: Solnix wget(1) NAME, SYNOPSIS, OPTIONS; Linux wget(1) (wget-1.25.0) NAME, SYNOPSIS, OPTIONS |
| Linux | option list differences | The mechanically extracted flag lists differ slightly. Solnix lists --no-config, which the Linux list lacks. Linux lists --check-certificate and --html-extension, which the Solnix list lacks. The extraction may be noisy and the pages are trimmed, so check `wget --help` on the target.Source: Header OPTION FLAGS for solnix and linux wget |
| FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD | no BSD page in the bundle | The bundle has no wget page for FreeBSD, OpenBSD or NetBSD, so no flag or behaviour comparison with the BSDs is possible. The manual here does not say whether those systems ship wget or what it does. Source: Header COUNTERPART lines (only linux is listed) |
| Linux | defaults and config files | Both pages say the default output is verbose (-v) and that -e commands run after .wgetrc and override it. Both say -b writes to wget-log when no -o is given. -nv gives less output than the default without being silent.Source: Solnix wget(1) -v, -nv, -b, -e; Linux wget(1) -v, -nv, -b, -e |
Standards
- POSIX: wget is not a POSIX.1-2024 utility.
Writing portable scripts
- Check for wget with `command
-vwget` before using it. The bundle documents it only for Solnix (from pkgs.solnix.wget) and Linux, not for the BSDs. - Stick to options that both pages show, such as
-O,-o,-q,-c,-r,-iand--tries, and avoid depending on options in only one of the extracted flag lists.
Every difference here is taken from the manual pages linked above: Solnix's published page, Linux (man-pages and the GNU and util-linux manuals), FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD. Each row names its source. Where a manual is silent, this page is too. Compiled 2026-10-26. Found a mistake? Mail hackers@lists.solnix.io.
