xz(1) on Solnix vs Linux and the BSDs

xz is not in the Solnix base system. Install pkgs.solnix.xz to get it. The Solnix page matches the Linux, FreeBSD and NetBSD xz(1) pages in the sections the bundle includes. The only difference found is that --no-sync is not in the Solnix page's extracted option list.

What Solnix runs

Not installed by default: add pkgs.solnix.xz. The package publishes the upstream xz implementation, and no other illumos variants are shipped. The man page names the same command aliases as the other systems: unxz, xzcat, lzma, unlzma and lzcat. The Solnix package version is not stated in the bundle.

Differences

Compared withTopicWhat differs
all fournot in the base systemA default Solnix system has no xz on PATH. Linux, FreeBSD and NetBSD ship xz(1) pages in this comparison, and the Solnix header says to install pkgs.solnix.xz first. Scripts that call xz, unxz or xzcat fail until the package is added.

Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD--no-sync optionThe Linux (xz-5.8.4), FreeBSD 15.1 and NetBSD 11.0 pages list --no-sync. The option list extracted from the Solnix page does not include it. Treat --no-sync as unavailable on Solnix unless the installed xz --help shows it. The trimmed bundle cannot confirm this.

Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSDsame programApart from --no-sync, the Solnix text matches the Linux, FreeBSD and NetBSD pages in the visible sections. These cover file suffix handling, skipping of files with several hard links or setuid/setgid/sticky bits, concatenation and padding, the XZ_DEFAULTS variable, and SIGINFO/SIGUSR1 progress output. The memory limiter is off by default on all four.

Standards

  • POSIX: xz is not a POSIX.1-2024 utility.

Writing portable scripts

  • Do not use --no-sync in portable scripts. The Solnix page's option list does not include it, although the Linux, FreeBSD and NetBSD pages do.
  • Do not rely on xz copying ACLs or extended attributes. All the pages say xz does not support this yet. If memory is limited, set XZ_DEFAULTS=--memlimit=limit, because the limiter is disabled by default.

Every difference here is taken from the manual pages linked above: Solnix's published page, Linux (man-pages and the GNU and util-linux manuals), FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD. Each row names its source. Where a manual is silent, this page is too. Compiled 2026-10-26. Found a mistake? Mail hackers@lists.solnix.io.
