xzmore(1) on Solnix vs Linux and the BSDs
xzmore is not in the Solnix base system; install pkgs.solnix.xz to get it. The Solnix and Linux pages describe the same xz-project script. The only documented difference is that the Linux page marks lzmore as deprecated and the Solnix page does not.

What Solnix runs
Not installed by default: add pkgs.solnix.xz. The bundle shows no illumos variant of xzmore and lists no other variants.
Differences
| Compared with | Topic | What differs |
|---|---|---|
| Linux | lzmore deprecation | The Linux page marks lzmore as DEPRECATED in the SYNOPSIS and says it will be removed in a future version. The Solnix page (dated 2024-02-12) says only that lzmore is kept for backward compatibility with LZMA Utils and gives no deprecation notice. | Linux | same program | The Solnix and Linux pages have the same NAME, synopsis (xzmore [file...]), behaviour and ENVIRONMENT section. The same xz-project script is documented in both. The Linux page is from xz-5.8.4 and the Solnix page is dated 2024-02-12, which is older than the Linux page's 2025-03-06. Source: Solnix and Linux xzmore(1) NAME, SYNOPSIS, DESCRIPTION, ENVIRONMENT |
| FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD | no counterpart page | The bundle has no xzmore page for FreeBSD, OpenBSD or NetBSD, so the manual cannot be used to say whether the command exists there or how it behaves. Check locally before relying on it. Source: Bundle header lists only a Linux counterpart |
| all four | PAGER override | On Solnix and Linux, if PAGER is set, xzmore uses it instead of more(1). A script that sets PAGER changes which pager runs. Backward scrolling then depends on that pager and not on more(1). Source: Solnix xzmore(1) ENVIRONMENT; Linux xzmore(1) ENVIRONMENT |
Standards
- POSIX: xzmore is not a POSIX.1-2024 utility.
Writing portable scripts
- Do not assume xzmore is installed. On Solnix it needs pkgs.solnix.xz. Fall back to xz
-dcfile | more if it is missing, since the pages say xzmore decompresses with xz(1) and pipes the result to more(1). - Avoid the lzmore name in new scripts: the Linux page marks it deprecated and says it will be removed.
Every difference here is taken from the manual pages linked above: Solnix's published page, Linux (man-pages and the GNU and util-linux manuals), FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD. Each row names its source. Where a manual is silent, this page is too. Compiled 2026-10-26. Found a mistake? Mail hackers@lists.solnix.io.
