zstreamdump(8) on Solnix vs Linux and the BSDs

On Solnix, zstreamdump is the illumos command at /usr/sbin/zstreamdump. It has only -C and -v and reads a send stream from standard input. On Linux and FreeBSD, zstreamdump is only a compatibility alias for the multi-subcommand zstream utility ('zstream dump'), which adds -d and a file argument.

What Solnix runs

A default Solnix system runs the illumos zstreamdump at /usr/sbin/zstreamdump. No other variants are shipped. The Solnix page documents no zstream command, so the decompress, redup, token and recompress subcommands are not documented for Solnix.

Differences

Compared withTopicWhat differs
Linux, FreeBSDcommand structureSolnix zstreamdump is a standalone command with the synopsis zstreamdump [-C] [-v]. On Linux and FreeBSD the page is titled zstream and zstreamdump is only an alias for 'zstream dump'.
Source: Solnix zstreamdump(8) SYNOPSIS; Linux zstreamdump(8) NAME, zstream dump; FreeBSD zstreamdump(8) NAME, zstream dump
Linux, FreeBSD-d option missingSolnix zstreamdump has no -d. On Linux and FreeBSD, 'zstream dump -d' dumps the data in each record and implies verbose. The Solnix page documents no way to dump record data.
Source: Solnix zstreamdump(8) SYNOPSIS, OPTIONS; Linux zstream(8) dump -d; FreeBSD zstream(8) dump -d
Linux, FreeBSD-v meaningSolnix -v dumps all headers, not only begin and end headers. On Linux and FreeBSD, 'zstream dump -v' prints metadata for each record. The wording differs. The manuals do not say whether the output is identical.
Source: Solnix zstreamdump(8) -v; Linux zstream(8) dump -v; FreeBSD zstream(8) dump -v
Linux, FreeBSDfile argumentThe Solnix synopsis shows no file operand, and the page says the utility reads the output of zfs send. Linux and FreeBSD 'zstream dump' accept an optional file, or read standard input.
Source: Solnix zstreamdump(8) SYNOPSIS, DESCRIPTION; Linux zstream(8) dump [file]; FreeBSD zstream(8) dump [file]
Linux, FreeBSDother stream toolsLinux and FreeBSD zstream also provide decompress, redup, token and recompress. The Solnix page documents none of these, including converting deduplicated streams with redup.
Source: Solnix zstreamdump(8) SYNOPSIS; Linux zstream(8) SYNOPSIS, redup; FreeBSD zstream(8) SYNOPSIS, redup
Linux, FreeBSD-C meaning-C suppresses checksum validation on all three systems. A Solnix script using only -C and -v keeps the same meaning when run through the zstreamdump alias on Linux or FreeBSD.

Standards

  • POSIX: zstreamdump is not a POSIX.1-2024 utility.
  • Solnix: Interface Stability: Uncommitted.

Writing portable scripts

  • Use only 'zstreamdump -C' and '-v', reading the stream on standard input (zfs send ... | zstreamdump -v). Avoid -d and zstream subcommands, which the Solnix page does not document.
