solnix installs on the ThinkPad X1 — a headless developer preview on real hardware
solnix — the Nix-managed distribution of the illumos kernel — now installs and runs on a real laptop: a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 1 (i7-8850H, 64 GB, NVMe). A full install to disk from a USB image, not a VM and not a live demo. The installed system boots from its own ZFS boot environment with Nix generations (every solnix-rebuild switch creates a new boot environment you can roll back to from the boot menu, exactly like nixos-rebuild), and it is Nix-managed end to end: a managed /etc static tree, NIX_PATH, channels, the flake registry, /etc/nixos/flake.nix — no pkg/IPS package management at all. The NixOS muscle memory works: sudo (over illumos RBAC/pfexec), solnix-rebuild (switch/boot/build/--rollback), nix-env -qaA, home-manager, solnix-generate-config. State lives where NixOS keeps it — shared /var datasets that survive a generation switch, /home on its own dataset, the store shared across boot environments — with wired DHCP networking, sshd, the full illumos SMF service set, and the GNU/BSD userland on PATH. To install: write the USB image to a stick, boot it, run solnix-install — it brings up networking, lets you pick a disk, lays down a boot environment, and reboots into a working Nix-managed system with no manual post-install setup. What is NOT claimed yet: graphics — the installed system is console/headless today; the i915 driver and the COSMIC desktop are in active bring-up on this exact machine and are not in this release. The honest one-line summary: solnix is a real Nix-on-illumos system you can install on a real laptop today, headless, with the NixOS workflow intact.
